A personal manifesto on responsibility, honesty, and the one truth most people spend their whole life running from.
There is one word that decides the shape of your life. One word most people never say out loud because if they said it, they would have to stop lying to themselves.
I.
Not God. Not luck. Not the economy. Not your boss. Not the stars you were born under. Not the childhood you did not choose. Not the country that treated you unfairly.
I.
Read this only if you are ready to be uncomfortable. If it does not disturb you, you did not read it slowly enough.
Everything In Your Life Is Yours
Your happiness. Your sadness. Your loneliness. Your peace. Your bank balance. Your body. Your relationships. The way people speak to you. The size of the life you live.
All of it yours. You built it. Not the world. Not the person who hurt you ten years ago. You.
I already know what you want to say. “But Karthick, what about the things I cannot control? The cancer. The layoff. The death of someone I loved.”
Yes. Those exist. Life will hand you things you did not order. That is honest.
But even then even then “I” is still in the equation. You cannot control that you got cancer. You can control whether you fight, how you take the medicine, whether you leave this world with dignity or with bitterness. You cannot control that you lost the job. You can control what you do on Monday morning. You cannot control that someone you loved is gone. You can control whether their memory becomes a wound you nurse forever or a fire that pushes you forward.
The external event is ten percent. Your response is ninety percent. And the response is always, always, always I.
Here Is What I Learned.
I need to tell you something personal, and I want you to hear it as my story, not as a claim about the universe.
I grew up Brahmin. I have given blood and sweat to the gods. I have folded my hands and closed my eyes and asked and asked. For years.
Somewhere along the way, I noticed something.
Every time I prayed for something and got it, I was also working for it. Every time I prayed for something and did not get it, I told myself God had a plan. Both outcomes strengthened my faith. That is not evidence of God. That is evidence of a mind moving the goalposts to protect a belief.
Not overnight, and not without fear. Slowly.
I am not here to tell you whether God exists. I do not actually know, and neither does anyone else not the most confident priest, not the most confident atheist. Anyone who tells you they have proof is selling something.
Here is what I do know, from watching my own life and the lives of people around me:
Every time I outsourced my agency to something outside me God, astrology, luck, the stars, the timing, someone else’s decision I got weaker. Every time I took it back, I got stronger.
That is the mechanism. That is what matters. Whether God exists or not, the moment you decide something outside you is in charge of your life, you become smaller. You wait for signs. You wait for permission. You wait for a sign that never comes, and years pass.
You want the deepest truth I can give you?
You are the god of your life. Not in a spiritual sense. In a practical sense. You are the only intelligence in the universe that has any real interest in what happens to you today. You are the only one who can move your legs, your mouth, your money, your mind.
Pray to yourself. Talk to yourself. Trust yourself.
If you feel weak, you will be weak. If you feel strong, you will be strong. Your only real job is to train your mind and your body to speak the same language, to listen to each other, to act as one.
That is the only worship worth doing.
Why Cheating Costs More Than You Think
I want to tell you something, and I want to be careful how I say it because I used to say it wrong.
I used to say: the universe keeps a ledger. Whatever you send out comes back.
That is not quite right. There is no cosmic accountant tracking your sins. There does not need to be. The mechanism is much closer, and much more dangerous.
What you do repeatedly, you become. What you become decides what your life feels like.
If you cheat someone, you do not just take from them. You become a person who cheats. You start scanning every relationship for what you can extract. You start expecting others to cheat you because you know what people are capable of, because you are people. The world becomes exactly what your behavior makes it: transactional, hostile, thin.
If you lie to the person who trusts you, the lie does not sit still. It reorganizes you. You start managing what they know. You avoid certain conversations. You lose access to the part of yourself that could have been honest, because that part is now hiding from you.
If you steal money, credit, someone else’s idea, someone else’s time you tell yourself it was one time, one exception, one small thing. But your nervous system does not know the difference between one and many. You become a person who takes what is not theirs. And people who take what is not theirs live nervous, watchful, small lives.
This is not karma. This is not superstition. This is architecture.
Every small betrayal is a chisel. The thing being carved is you.
So: Do not steal. Do not hurt. Do not cheat. Not because a god is watching. Not because a book said so.
Because every one of those acts subtracts from the person you could have been. And by the time you notice what you have lost, it is very hard to get it back.
Where Did We Come From?
If there is no God, how are we here? What are we doing?
I do not know.
I want to stay with those three words a little longer than most writers do, because the willingness to say them is rare, and important. Anyone who claims to know is guessing dressed up as certainty.
Here is what I sit with, on the good days. Not as fact. Not as belief. As a thought that keeps my mind open.
We are not visitors on this planet. We are the planet, temporarily arranged into people who can read this sentence.
The iron in your blood is the same iron in the earth. The water in your body is the same water in the rivers. The carbon in your bones was in a tree before it was in you, and before that in a star. When you die, your body will not go somewhere else it will go back into the ground, and grow other things, and feed other lives. You are not on Earth. You are Earth, briefly conscious.
That is not religion. That is chemistry. And it is enough of a mystery for me.
Whether the universe itself is alive, whether the stars have tasks, whether the sun feels anything I do not know. I sometimes feel that it does. I would not defend that as fact. What I do know is that we are made of the same stuff as everything else. And when you feel that in your bones, you stop feeling separate from the world.
That alone changes how you live.
Almost Every Problem You Have, You Made
Sit down and be honest with yourself for one minute.
Ninety percent of the wreckage in your life you built. You made the choice. You said the thing. You avoided the conversation. You skipped the workout. You took the shortcut. You lied to yourself about what you wanted.
This is not an insult. This is the best news you will ever get.
Because if you made it, you can unmake it.
Every experience even the ones that broke you becomes fuel, if you let it. But only if you take the first step:
Stop blaming.
Blame God, and nothing changes. Blame luck, and nothing changes. Blame your zodiac, your parents, your government, your ex, your boss nothing changes.
Say I — and everything starts to move.
Without a Goal, You Are Just Reacting
If you do not know what you want, life will happen to you. You will spend your days reacting to whatever lands in front of you the message, the meeting, the meal, the mood. Ten years will pass. You will look up and wonder where they went.
Finding what you want is the hardest work you will ever do. Harder than earning the thing itself.
Here is the only method that works.
Get a pen. Get paper.
Do not use AI for this. Do not use your laptop. Do not ask ChatGPT. No machine can tell you what you want. This is between you and yourself, and no one else not your parents, not your best friend, not me has any business in it.
Sit alone. Write down everything that would make you happy. Everything. Do not filter. If marrying a rich person would make you happy, write it. If becoming famous would make you happy, write it. If disappearing to a village would make you happy, write it. Do not perform for anyone not even for yourself.
Then strike out what is not honest. Strike out what belongs to your parents. Strike out what belongs to Instagram. Strike out what you want only because you are supposed to want it.
Keep going.
At some point not immediately, sometimes after days one thing on that page will feel different. Your brain will click into your heart. You will know.
That is your goal.
Now Test It
Once you have it, ask two questions.
Is this TRUE? Not “does it sound nice” is this the real thing I want, in the quiet, when no one is watching? If you would still want it if no one ever knew you had it it is true.
Is this DOABLE? If you are broke and jobless today and you say “I want 100 billion dollars in two years,” you are lying to yourself. Not because the number is big because the arithmetic is impossible. Set a goal that stretches you to the edge of what is real. Not past it.
Once the goal survives both tests, plant it inside you. Say it to yourself in the morning. Say it before you sleep. Let your body know. Let your brain know. Both will begin to work for you even when you are not looking.
The Problems Are the Path
Now the real work begins.
Write down every problem standing between you and the goal. Every one. Small ones, big ones, embarrassing ones. Do it on paper again, no AI, no shortcuts. Your hand needs to move. Your mind needs to slow down enough to see clearly.
Then, one by one, solve them.
You will fail. Repeatedly. You will cry. Something inside you will feel like it is dying because it is. The old version of you has to die for the new one to exist. That is not a warning. That is the deal.
Keep moving.
Train your mind and body to accept pain the way an athlete accepts sore muscles as evidence that something is being built.
I speak from experience. My mind has been beaten again and again and again. And every time it stood back up, it knew a little more about what to do next. I have come to love my mind for its scars. You will love yours too if you let it fight.
The Rules on the Road
While you fight for your goal, obey these:
- Be honest. Especially with yourself.
- Do not hurt people. Ever. On purpose. For gain.
- Do not cheat. Not partners. Not customers. Not the system.
- Do not steal. Not money. Not credit. Not time from people who trust you.
- Keep moving. Even one inch a day.
Break these, and no matter how much you earn, you will feel it. Not because something is watching. Because every time you break one, you subtract a piece of the person you were meant to become. And by the time you notice what you have lost, it is very hard to get back.
Do not test this. I have watched too many people test it, and I have never once seen it end well.
The Only Truth
Ignore the noise. People will laugh. Family members will laugh sometimes they laugh loudest. Colleagues will doubt you. Strangers will predict your failure. None of it is real.
Only I is real.
Only you and your mind. Only your practice. Only your hands, working. Only your brain and your heart, slowly learning to speak the same language. Only your body, obeying the goal you gave it.
You do not need permission. You do not need a god. You do not need luck. You do not need the zodiac aligned.
You need one word.
I.
Say it. Own it. Carry it. Let it be the weight that keeps you steady when the storm comes because the storm will come, and it will come again, and when it does, “I” is the only thing that will hold.
You are responsible for your life. Fully. Terrifyingly. Beautifully. Completely.
All power is within you. You can do everything and anything.
No one else.
Only I.
